About the Role:

Flex Analytics is bringing the modern data stack to higher education. As the Senior Data Engineer, you’ll drive the vision and direction of analytics engineering and data infrastructure. You’ll work on the design and development of data products that can be deployed as “off-the-shelf” products for higher education customers using data mesh, allowing them to plug FlexIt Analytics into a common data platform independent of source systems. You will be the first full-time employee and work directly with the founder. You’ll also be responsible for growing and mentoring our data team as we expand. You must have a deep understanding of enterprise-grade architecture and organizations, with knowledge of how to modernize traditional/legacy tools and architectures within the constraints of higher education institutions.

The ideal candidate has broad experience with debt and data analytics engineering best practices, as well as knowledge of higher education data. However, we understand that the modern data stack is very new to higher education. Therefore, we are interested in candidates who excel with higher education data and want to learn new tools and processes, or candidates who excel with the modern data stack and are interested in learning and developing higher education data products.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop data products that can be deployed as “off-the-shelf” products using dbt, “off-the-shelf” meaning agnostic to source systems and destination cloud warehouses.
  • Work on our all-in-one software products that integrate with debt to provide data reliability, observability, data catalogs, semantic layers, data governance, rigorous testing capabilities, data transformation, and continuous integration.
  • Lead the design and implementation of dimensional data warehouse models for research, analysis, and reporting/dashboarding.
  • Work collaboratively with customers to create analytics solutions that are scalable, easy to maintain, and support self-service in both cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Design solutions that are simple, easy to deploy, and that customers can maintain with limited resources and limited ongoing external support.
  • Implement code testing, continuous integration, and deployment strategies to ensure reliability.
  • Design and implement pipelines to integrate data coming from disparate databases, APIs, flat files, or other sources.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of relevant data experience
  • Very high proficiency with debt Cloud and debt-core
  • Very high proficiency with Kimball dimensional modeling
  • Very high proficiency in SQL (aggregate functions, window functions, complex joins, CTE), including query optimization skills.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining modern ELT pipelines.
  • Proficiency with modern cloud data warehouses (AWS Redshift, Snowflake, etc.)
  • Understanding of enterprise-grade systems and data architectures.
  • Knowledge of software engineering best practices and team-based development using Git
  • Experience collaborating with disparate teams to deliver sustainable architectures that better serve the data needs of the business.
  • A problem solver with a self-starter mindset that can adapt well to changing priorities.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in higher education is desirable, but not required.
  • Knowledge of AWS services and security, including EC2, Redshift, DMS, Glue, security groups, networking, and storage.
  • Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code tools and best practices (Terraform, CloudFormation)
  • Familiarity with traditional relational databases (SQL Server, Oracle, Postgres, etc.)
  • Some familiarity with BI tools (Power BI, Tableau, Looker, FlexIt Analytics, etc.)
