Google Maps uncovers Generative AI to Enhance Discovery Experience!
Google Maps is stepping up its game with a groundbreaking feature: generative AI. This new addition aims to transform your exploration of the world by making it more conversational and intuitive. It is finally here to make an explorer in you feel more alive and not-so-alone even on a long drive!
How Does It Work?
It is powered by large language models (LLMs). Google Maps now analyzes over 250 million locations and taps into the wisdom of 300 million Local Guides. When you’re on the hunt for something specific, like cool thrift shops in San Francisco with a vintage vibe, or a cool book café with coffee, simply type in your query and get your answers in a jiffy. Maps will generate personalized recommendations, organized by categories, along with enticing photo carousels and review summaries to entice you to visit.
But here’s where it gets interesting: Google Maps doesn’t stop there. If you follow up with a question like “How about lunch?” after your vintage shopping spree, the AI takes your previous interest and suggests restaurants that match the criteria—think old-school diners or hidden gems.
Early Access and Beyond:
Starting this week, the generative AI experiment rolls out in the U.S., initially available to select Local Guides. These community contributors share reviews, facts, and photos to enrich Maps’ data. Soon, everyone will benefit from this feature, as it becomes accessible to a wider audience.
Google Maps is not just evolving beyond navigation—it’s becoming your go-to destination for discovering new places. As the company puts it, this is just the beginning of how they are supercharging Maps with generative AI.
