Reddit Public Content Policy: Requires Contract for Data Use

Reddit is a popular online platform. It has recently announced a major modification to its data access policies. The company has introduced a new “Public Content Policy” meant to regulate how Reddit’s data is accessed and used, particularly by commercial individuals.

This move comes in the wake of Reddit’s recent stock market debut and its plan to grow income from data licensing agreements. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman expressed that it didn’t make sense for Reddit to continue giving away its valuable data to some of the largest companies in the world for free. As a result, the new policy will further limit unauthorized access to Reddit’s data.

The policy addresses concerns about commercial entities using unauthorized access or misusing authorized access to collect public data in bulk. Reddit has made it clear that companies interested in using Reddit data for commercial purposes will now require a contract.

While the policy proposes to limit unauthorized data collection, it also guarantees that users, mods, researchers, and other good-faith, non-commercial actors continue to have access. The policy shapes the information partners can access via a public-content licensing agreement as well as the commitments Reddit makes to users about the usage of this content.

Partners are obliged to respect users’ choices to delete their content and are forbidden from using Reddit’s content to identify individuals or their personal information, including for ad targeting. They are also not allowed to use Reddit content to spam or annoy Redditors. Also, partners are not allowed to use Reddit content to conduct background checks, facial recognition, government surveillance, or help law enforcement do any of the above.

Reddit’s new policy endorses transparency and user control, directing to maintain public access to its content while imposing user protections. It seeks to respond to the growing trend of commercial entities collecting bulk public data without regard for privacy or user rights. This policy is a major step towards guaranteeing user privacy and data protection in the digital age.
